Hello.

We had the opportunity to travel to Costa Rica on three separate occasions and had a fantastic time shooting plenty of material for our site, asplashofglamour.com   ....and we love the country. I'm guessing you'll probably be flying into San Jose. It is a typical large city with large city problems, so be careful. Once you're out, into the country, the people are usually very friendly and very helpful.

On two of the trips, we stayed at a resort near the town of Jicaral, which is on the opposite side of the peninsula from Playa Samara. (We had the view of the Gulfo De Nicoya) Give yourself plenty of time to travel. Roads in that part of the country range from well developed to very rutted dirt roads. Expect your travel speed on the dirt roads to be greatly reduced. June is considered rainy season which is the best time to avoid tourists but some of the roads can become impassable. I suggest you rent a 4 wheel drive vehicle and do not take chances. The weather pattern is typical. The mornings are fantastic, but by 10 or 11 am, the rains come in. While the Costa Ricans are always making improvements to their roads, some of the bridges are out and the only way to pass is to drive thru the river. Best time to pass is during the mornings because once the daily rains begin, most rivers begin to flood and will take a few hours to drop low enough to drive thru.

As for horseback riding, it depends on who you come across or where you go. During our stays at the resort near Jicaral, the manager had workers who had horses, and they were happy to let us ride them...(and they were VERY happy when I did some topless photos of the models we brought along, riding their horses)

As for swimming holes...be very careful where you swim, especially near the coasts. Costa Rica has lots of salt water crocodiles. They aren't common on beaches, but they can be found in rivers and other bodies of water which contain salt water. Crocodiles are far less of a problem when you go up into the mountains and away from the coasts.

There are lots of waterfalls in Costa Rica. Theres many near the town of Montazuma, down the coast from Playa Samara. By Google maps, the distance is approximately 40 miles or 64Km, from Playa Samara, however as mentioned, the roads are dirt and travel speed will be slow.  On those trips, the waterfall we visited was at Karen Mogensen Nature Reserve, which is south of Jicaral.

On our third trip we actually rented an entire waterfall for our photoshoot. We visited the small coastal town of Jaco and met with a gentleman who operated a local tourist attraction which was a waterfall. In the rainy season, business is usually very slow, so he agreed to "rent" the waterfalls to us for a day and close the area to other visitors...We liked the area so much that we extended it to two days and got lots of photo sets.

Secluded beaches. During the rainy season, tourism is low, so many beaches tend to be empty, more or less. Many of the beaches in that part of the country are long, so those who do visit will likely be spread out. Be careful of the tides. They are fast in that part of the world, and the level rises or falls a lot in a short time. We once walked out onto a rock jetty during low tide and lost track of time (easy to do in Costa Rica) by the time we wanted to leave, we had to wade waist deep.

Overall, my suggestion is, don't make rigid plans. Costa Rica is a great place and many of the best times tend to just happen. Do be safe in regular activities. As mentioned, some of the roads and bridges are in poor shape. Road hazards are common, to include landslides. (Costa Rica is in an earthquake zone which is still very active) Be extremely careful driving on the Pan-American highway. Theres a lot of truck traffic, steep mountain passes and no guard rails.

I'd be happy to answer more questions...

Sincerely EdR

Hello,

Taking a vacation in June to Sámara beach and La Fortuna Costa Rica for 7 nights. Any tips for places to get wet without a lot of spectators?  Horseback riding, swimming holes, waterfalls, secluded beaches, etc?

Thanks!
