Those who are proponents of gun ownership will often refer to the 2nd amendment of the U.S.'s constitution as the guarantee of a person's right to bear arms, but rarely--if ever--mention the end of a "well-regulated militia" that the original amendment prescribes.

Perhaps this can be part of the requirement of gun ownership--training and participation in a militia?

Counterargument: the militia is likely outdated in the U.S.  The gun problem (or situation, if you prefer) seems to be engrained in our national ethos, maybe an offshoot of our country not being safe for diversity.

Clearly, I haven't given this too much thought...but there are folks who have, and their efforts in our country have not been met with ideal results.

Don't be so naive, youngwetfan. Yes, you have 20,000 gun laws, but none of them actually prohibit guns outright. Yes, you have laws, but they lack bite. I heard some debate about a new rule around silencers, on the basis that people's lives were probably saved because silencers are illegal and so people could locate the origin of the shooting from the sound. This typifies things. Arguing over silencers?! Seriously! Talk about rearranging the deck chairs as the Titanic goes down.

I get that there's a gun culture in the States, and that laws by themselves won't solve the problem, but you have to start somewhere. In the UK, where I live, it's simply unheard of to have a gun in a city. Even for country dwellers, it's exceptional. Outside the hands of a policeman, I don't even think I've ever seen a gun in this country. The point is that if a normal successful property magnate in the UK decides to flip out and go psycho, its virtually impossible for him to do it with a guns, which is why we simply don't have these kind of massacres over here.

So, if you don't think laws help, then what is your suggestion?!

*sigh...* Really? Gun laws are too lax, here? This is absolutely not the place for such debates, but I feel the need to speak up briefly, anyway. This heinous attack in Las Vegas was illegal. The weapon(s) used were illegal to own, in that they were illegally modified to fully automatic action (machine guns- HEAVILY controlled in the US since 1934, and almost impossible for an individual to own). Murder is illegal, whether it's one victim or fifty. From what little I've heard, the only legal part of any of it was that the shooter originally bought his semi-automatic rifle(s) legally, illustrating again that our federal background checks are useless and ineffectual. BTW, this is apparently only the 4th time since 1934 that machine guns ("assault rifles" in today's media language) have been used in a crime in the US.

More laws aren't the answer. There are already about 20,000 gun control laws on the books in the USA. None of them stopped this guy...

...but it would not only help to pray. Your government and the NRA should recognize, that their weapon law (if there is a law, because some states are free spaces) is to weak and they should sharp the law.
