IMO limiting access to extra content like video clips is a good idea but it also is more work than linking a file. And solving the barrier should not be as complicated as your last “game” (which is also only my opinion). Most people have only found the link in the source code of the site.
At the other hand sites which bandwidth restrictions should use efficient compression technologies for their content. The mpeg from Styx was of incredible quality but also incredible oversized. The WMV would have done fine enough.
And suddenly I suggest if you want more feedback print it on every available position on your web sites. You may also link to the forum where you want the feedback to go. Many people are lazy and what was written on the first site is of little interest on the second site. Example: Most feedback comes if content is posted in a forum because the way from getting the content to leaving the feedback is very short. So try to lower the way between content and feedback.
After all I hope you don’t get me wrong with that. I fully understand why this Message was started and your complaint is right. But there are only two possible ways. You can deal with the fact that wamers are also only human beings and you must force them to get active or you do not. Maybe there was a time when all wamers where most kindly one to another but as the community has heavily grown people get more anonymous and back to normal human behavior.
Btw: Maybe I can help sometimes if some large files have to be hosted but your traffic runs out. I have my own server inside a college net and therefore a higher traffic limit. Contact me by email if you have any questions.
Bye, Bertel

By MK - wamtec@compuserve.com Fri 03/01/03 12:37:39 GMT Thankless !!
My favorite analogy is..."plankton versus the whale"
The "whale" is the wam community (of which 85% are invisible lurkers) and "plankton" are the thousands of media bits that the wam producers and webmaster create each week.
The whale feeds on thousands of plankton each day...and silently cruises by and gobbles it all up...and rarely stops to burp or fart.....ha ha.
As for webmastering or video producing being a thankless job...all I can say is...you ain't seen nuttin until you start to do video editing...cos by FAR the number one most thankless job is being a video editor...cos nobody ever notices what you do there....but thats not such a bad thing...cos if you are not conscious of the editing, then then editor has done a good job. If you become conscious of the editing, then the editor has used too many distracting or annoying effects.
Another analogy would be to the Oscar ceremonies...i.e. the tv coverage only shows you all the big stars and big names getting their recognition....all the great people behind the scenes who helped to make their movies possible (i.e. sound editors, video editors, fx artists, body doubles, stunt people, music scorers etc)....are given their awards off camera and not in public.
Why do you think I made "a game" out of the last wmv video stream I created...cos I got no reaction or feedback from the prior stream I posted...so I decided to make folks play a game to look for the hidden link....and then I got lots of reaction.
I will do that with my next video stream too...i.e. give folks a puzzle to solve in order to find the link...to try to make the whale fart a little in order to see my next video stream

By AnthonyX - anthonyx@jowc.net Fri 03/01/03 10:02:23 GMT I downloaded the 13MB "Louise" clip... site performance is very nice thanks... wish more sites were that fast.
As to the "Louise" clip itself... I've had to curtail my "discretionary" spending and it does hurt when I see material like that clip... That has got to be some of the best wetlook material I've ever seen. Gorgeous model, excellent camera work, editing, even the background music. My compliments to Kev(?) for his excellent work, and to you, Graham, for hosting the content.

In reply to Message (1625) Bandwidth ... and disappointment
By Graham (UK) - gswet@lisabubbles.org Fri 03/01/03 09:25:45 GMT Website: www.grayhost.net The new GrayHost server is standing up well to its use. As well as the sites already located on it, there has been a large number of hits to Kev's www.styx-photography.com site since WIR publised it in #1597 below. That site alone has served in excess of 14Gb of data in just under 2 days. Such an amount would have blown the entire month's limit of the server I was using for Lisa Bubbles by a factor of 3!
So, I am well pleased with the way it is responding and I wonder how the response is to you, the visitors?
And the disappointment .... ?
... well over 2000 people have viewed the superb MPEG that Kev put there of his new model Louise, and around 1000 have viewed the WMV video ... yet there has not been one comment from anyone, not even a thank you! As other webmasters out there know, it's a thankless job isn't it?
